Asymmetric Magnetic Anomalies Over Young Impact Craters on Mercury

چکیده

Mercury's crustal magnetic field map includes anomalies that are related to impact craters. surface has a low iron abundance, but it is likely some impactors brought carriers able register the planet's was present during impact. Anomalies associated with relatively young Rustaveli and Stieglitz craters asymmetric respect crater center. We analyze location of morphologies understand whether there any correlation. investigate geological framework these two constrain overall dynamics. In both cases, correlate well melt inferred direction. Both angles were probably 40°–45°, preferential distribution downrange. Inversion dipoles suggest located downrange encompasses magnetized material, which hence responsible for detected anomalies.

Magnetic Anomalies over a Young Oceanic Ridge off Vancouver Island.

The recent speculation that the magnetic anomalies observed over oceanic ridges might be explained in terms of ocean-floor spreading and periodic reversals of the earth's magnetic field may now be reexamined in the light of suggested reversals during the past 4 million years and the newly described Juan de Fuca Ridge.

Impact craters on Titan

Five certain impact craters and 44 additional nearly certain and probable ones have been identified on the 22% of Titan’s surface imaged by Cassini’s high-resolution radar through December 2007. The certain craters have morphologies similar to impact craters on rocky planets, as well as two with radar bright, jagged rims. The less certain craters often appear to be eroded versions of the certai...

Exposure of spectrally distinct material by impact craters on Mercury: Implications for global stratigraphy

MESSENGER’s Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS) obtained multispectral images for more than 80% of the surface of Mercury during its first two flybys. Those images have confirmed that the surface of Mercury exhibits subtle color variations, some of which can be attributed to compositional differences. In many areas, impact craters are associated with material that is spectrally distinct from the...
